My Writings

I started writing about my thoughts in 1959, responding to some troubles I was having in college. Since then I’ve filled a succession of hand-written notebooks, supplemented since the start of the digital age by essays and other musings created digitally. Many of my blog entries are derived from the hand-written thoughts.

What they generally convey is the story of self and world. The world of the self comes into conflict and dialogue with the actual world of human society and the earth.

There is a reason for the perennial interest in stories of The Hero’s Journey, as discussed by Joseph Campbell. Each of us is a hero or heroine in our own particular journey through life, the ever-changing story of self and world.

  1. Ralph Waldo Emerson would approve of the every man/woman is a kind of hero/heroine as opposed to a self-lessening worship of some other as if a larger than Life (and us) hero. The use of story is ancient and forever contemporary and, I believe, one of the highest arts done well. I am glad for your telling your story and encourage others to do the same. One more point is that though each story has its focal point of actors doing, seeing or saying things, it also appears in a larger context and that context or world-view is a vital part of the meaning of the story or how we each find meaning in our own story or self-story. Good luck to all in telling you story to yourself and to the world. All the better if like, Charles, you write some of them down, and share them with the world. –Wendell Refior
