Powering Down

Blogger Charlotte DuCann [https://charlotteducann.net/] has said that our society needs to “power down.”

What does that mean? I see several aspects of this.

First, it means to stop mining and using fossil fuels in order to stop increasing atmosphere gases such as CO2 and methane that create runaway warming.

Second, it means to stop the “humaniforming” of Earth, the continued runaway expansion of the human footprint that is jeopardizing the capability of other forms of life to support humanity and in fact much of life itself.

Third, it means to achieve a shift in consciousness that will move Western Civilization away from the ideology of progress that powers the humaniforming and toward new stories centered around the view that “we have enough. We have done enough.”

Fourth, it means the devolution of humanity’s social, economic, and political relations down to the community level, along with another shift in consciousness that does away with power of a person altogether. In communities small enough there is no power; everyone is just an equal person, the community makes decisions, and leadership is temporary and shared.
