The Unity of Personhood

The human being is an integral union of mind, body, and spirit.

However, as we grow up from childhood, the mind is cultivated through education and professional work. The body is cultivated through athletics, fitness, and food choices. The spirit is cultivated through religious institutions.

These three social forces pull on these three components of ourselves in different directions. Often one of these institutions claims supremacy of its favorite human attribute over the others. It is difficult for a person to understand one’s fundamental union when social forces pull us apart.

It can take a long time and much introspection to understand this unity. There are guides and gurus through history to help us but they are difficult to find. My guide was the book The Life We Are Given by George Leonard and Michael Murphy.1 Then it takes a lot of practice to fully understand.
